“Got Demons?” seems to inquire the mugshot of Berklee trained muso Jordan Carp from the cover of his third release, Spaceman. Jordan invests his faux Beatles indie pop with considerable pain-of-life baggage, but is just too cerebral to be as heart-on-sleeve lachrymose as he wants to be. Carp sings of the pratfalls of social edginess, lived by the usual embittered loner suspects, in a well-traveled, world-weary post grunge voice that somehow always applies, no matter how far from home the music ventures. Spaceman begins slowly, like the David Lynch films he admires, but by “Fantasies of You” we’re squarely enmeshed in 10cc territory. “The Poet” shows an affinity for Abbey Road era Beatles. The ironically titled “NYC Skyline” is a Dylan-ish folksy jangle, and “Rotten Girl” proudly echoes Wall- period Pink Floyd. Carp shows that he’s capable of acerbic wit throughout, especially on the wry “Far Superior Nose”. Special commendation should go out to co-producer Josh Fix, who’s multi-instrumental and arranging skills helped to flesh out this disc. If only all of us could transform our emotional issues into gold such as this!” – John Patrick Progression Magazine Summer 2008
